Angel Campey – yes, her name really is Angel –Has made her mark on the South African comedy scene after a relatively short time.  Starting out in 2011 on Long Street, Cape Town to a standing ovation, her career has rolled with the punch(lines) ever since.

In her first year of being a stand-up she made the finals in the prestigious ‘Parker’s Comedy Showdown’ in Johannesburg, beating out over 50 other hopefuls in Stand-Up Comedy battles (and was the only girl in the top 10). She appeared on TV’s Comedy Central Africa in the live taping of her stand-up on ‘Kings & Queens of Comedy’ and launched her own online radio show on Cape Town’s number one digital station, 2oceansvibe Radio, which has been successfully running on Friday -Lunch since 2012 to date.

Angel has since become a staple on comedy stages all around SA and an annual fixture performing in comedy tents at rock festivals like Rocking the Daisies, Synergy Live, Rock the RiverUp the Creek. She has also made six appearances, to date, on Comedy Central’s “Kings and Queens of Comedy” stage alongside SA’s biggest and best comics to sold-out arenas of 6000 people (Including shows in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town).

In 2015 Angel was nominated by the South African Department of Arts and Culture for an Mbokodo Award, recognising women changing the game in their industries, for Comedy. And in 2016, Angel joined Comedy Central Africa at Just for Laughs, Comedy Festival in Montreal Canada, the biggest stand up comedy festival in the world.  She also toured to USA twice, to perform in New York City for a few months in 2016, including performances at the iconic, Gotham Comedy Club, Comic Strip Live, New York Comedy Club and Dangerfields (the oldest, longest running comedy club in the world).

Launching her first full hour of comedy, Yes, Really Angel directed by Nik Rabinowitz and produced by Siv Ngesi in 2013 was another milestone in Angel’s career. Her intelligent blend of “razor-sharp wit and observational humour” was heralded as “nothing short of hilarious” in the reviews of her show which debuted in Grahamstown at the SA National Arts Festival in 2013 and then toured to Johannesburg to further critical acclaim. It has since returned to the National Arts festival in 2014 and made its final run in 2015, which was sold out and got rave reviews. Angel is currently writing a new hour (Devils Advocate) but ‘Yes Really Angel’ will continue to tour more SA theatres due to popular demand.

2015 review

2015 review

Angel’s director, comedy legend Nik Rabinowitz, came on board in his directorial debut to work with the new comedian after seeing her on stage only once. He saw her potential to be the next big thing for South African comedy and calls her “the sharpest comedic mind since Blade Nzimande”.

Her somewhat autobiographical debut show ‘Yes, Really Angel’ tackled topics like growing up with the name Angel, being old enough to remember Apartheid (but young enough to have only noticed that the flag changed), Guardian Angels vs Car Guards, White Privilege, Autocorrect fails, Glitter, Teaching English in South Korea,  The Zombie Apocalypse and how she found comedy as a career wearing stilettos and a red bikini.  Much like prescription drugs, her one woman show is popular with students and grannies alike.
